What it means to be an artist.
Sure, it may seem glamorous; having your own shows, being your own boss, living with passion, having people recognize you… etc. But what most people don’t know about being an artist is the negative side. The term ‘starving artist’ didn’t die off with the renaissance. An artist must be able to pay the rent/utilities/food, materials and frames before the shows, investing in your own marketing (unless one can afford to hire someone else), traveling and transporting work… etc. So much tends to go out and none seems to come in when you just started to emerge into the world.
Some artists can’t make it.
Some artists give up.
Is the struggle worth it?
More then anything in the world.
This is about my daily life as an artist.
画家であるという事は何を意味しているのか。
一見画家という生き方を華やかに感じる者は多いだろう。自分の企画展を持ち、上司がいず、情熱に任せて生き、人々に認められ・・・云々。しかし大半の人々は画家の生活のネガティブな方面を知らないのではなかろうか。ルネッサンス時代に「飢えた画家」の表現は消えた訳ではないのである。画家は収入がないまま貯金から家賃・電気水道ガス代・食事代、展示する前に画材やら額代、自分の売り込み（他人を雇えるだけの貯金があれば別だが）、交通旅費に絵画の移動・・・云々を総て懐から出さなければならない。世界に画家として進出し始める頃はあまりにも支出が多く収入はない上に不定期。
それが出来ない画家もいる。
諦める画家もいる。
画家という生き方はこんなに苦しむ価値があるものだろうか。
私には世界の何よりも価値がある。
これは私の画家としての日常である。
